nslookup
is a tool to resolve the IPs of a given dns entry, this is quite handy when you are modifying the dns and want to check if it updated, together with watch
is quite nice.
watch -n2 "nslookup mysite.example.com"
telnet
the classic way to check if you are able to reach a service on a specific port. For example, to check if you can reach a redis machine.
telnet redis.example.com 6379
traceroute
traces and measures hops on the internet, for example, here is a traceroute for www.google.com from spain, which clearly hops over google/telefonica routers to reach the destination.
